A new “sun tax” in New South Wales (NSW) is set to charge solar panel owners in the state who send excess electricity back to the grid during peak times, usually in the daytime.
Currently, about 3.5 million Australians with solar panels earn money for the extra power they provide through their retailers, known as Feed-in-Tariff (FiT).
How the ‘sun tax’ is affecting households
The ‘sun tax’ changes have been introduced supposedly to ease congestion in the electricity network, which struggles to handle high demand when many people export power. The changes are imposed to households for stabilising the grid.
However, solar customers are reconsidering giving away their excess energy to avoid these new charges. And to sidestep the fees, customers can choose to export their solar energy at off-peak times or invest in affordable batteries to store their power.
Installing a battery in NSW is becoming essential for solar panel owners to avoid these additional costs.
Why consider a battery?
It’s not a new concept, but as the daytime is getting longer, there has never been a better time to store sunshine during the day so that you can power your nights away.
