The New South Wales (NSW) government is setting some ambitious goals to revolutionise energy consumption by aiming for 1 million households and small businesses to install solar and battery systems by 2035.

This shift supports the closure of the state’s last coal-fired generator and addresses future energy needs, including electric vehicles (EVs).

The new Consumer Energy Strategy, emerging from a recent electricity sector review, will enhance support for small-scale energy resources and expand grid capacity. Inspired by South Australia’s approach, NSW will also incentivise participation in virtual power plants (VPPs), targeting 3.4 gigawatts (GW) by 2035 and 10 GW by 2050.

Why should you consider this?

Investing now in solar and battery systems not only prepares you for the future energy landscape but also positions you to benefit from upcoming incentives and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable energy grid.

With a shrinking payback period, an investment in solar and battery systems makes good financial sense for households and businesses that are also concerned with escalating energy costs.

Incentives to help households and businesses in NSW

To encourage adoption, the state will offer financial support, providing households and small businesses with between $1,600 and $2,400 for purchasing solar batteries.

Additionally, a $250 incentive will be available for signing up to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). These VPPs will play a crucial role in managing energy resources, allowing homes to store solar power for nighttime use and trade excess energy with the grid.
